World War 1

World War 1 from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918 making 2014 the centenary year since its start.
Allied forces : France, UK and Russia joined by Italy, Japan and US.
Central powers : Germany and Austria-Hungary joined by the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
Belgium and Luxembourg remained neutral.

Brittany / Bretagne - France

Brittany / Bretagne is on the west coast of France. It has four departments : Cotes d'Armor, Ile-et-Vilaine, Finistere and Morbihan. The English Channel is to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Famous for its oysters and shellfish as well as its pancakes and cider.

MONT ST MICHEL - on the border of Normandy and Brittany. A village with shops, hotels, chapels, leading up a narrow street and several steps to the abbey which has gothic / roman architecture and a gold statue of St Michel on the spire. Overnight accommodation available, possibly choose the renowned hotel and restaurant La Mere Poulard. Local speciality is lamb/mutton pre-sale (meat from sheep that have grazed on the nearby meadows) or why not try a delicious omelette.

RANCE ESTUARY - Very picturesque, near St-Malo and Dinard. Visit the medieval town of Dinan or further inland the medieval town of Vitre.

CANCALE, ERQUY, BINIC, PAIMPOL, TREGUIER - Coastal route (La Corniche) towards the pink granite coast of Tregastel and Perros Guirec before continuing on to BREST with its huge natural harbour.

QUIMPER - cobbled streets, timber-framed houses and ladies making and selling lace,
CONCARNEAU - fishing port with old walled town,
PONT AVEN - picturesque with restored water-mills and galleries,
just a few places to visit along the Finistere coast.

LORIENT - large town with fishing port (port de plaisance) in Morbihan. Annual International Celtic Festival takes place in August. Compagnie des Indes built its shipyards opposite PORT LOUIS.

QUIBERON - lively port and resort at the end of a narrow strip of land, sea on both sides. Cote Sauvage popular with surfers.

GULF OF MORBIHAN -  a stretch of sea between Port Navalo and Locmariaquer. Inlets and ports including medieval town of Vannes, cobbled streets/old port St Goustan at Auray. Megaliths, dolmens, menhirs and tumuli in this area.

CARNAC - Seaside resort famous for its standing stones (Menhirs).

JOSSELIN - Inland near the Nantes-Brest canal and River Oust, has an impressive chateau and is a petite cite de caractere.

Normandy / Normandie - France

Normandy / Normandie is in north-west France and 6 June 1944  was the date of the D/Day Landings in World War 2. The invasion of Normandy, airborne troops and amphibious landing of Allied Infantry and Armoured Divisions.
Landing beaches :
SWORD - Colleville Plage, Lion-sur-Mer, and St-Aubin
JUNO - Bernieres and Courseulles
GOLD - Ver-sur-Mer and Asnelles
OMAHA - St-Laurent, Colleville and Vierville-sur-Mer
UTAH BEACH - on the Cotentin or Cherbourg peninsula.
 
The coastal route passes several memorials, museums and cemeteries.
ARROMANCHES has the remains of the Mulberry harbours and museum.
ST-MERE-EGLISE is the village where the parachute regiment landed.
PEGASUS BRIDGE has museum of Airborne landings.
CAEN has the large Memorial Museum.
BATTERIE-DU-LONGUES and POINTE DU HOC are part of the ATLANTIC WALL, the coastal fortifications built by the Germans.

BAYEUX was the first town to be liberated in 1944 and has World War 2 Memorial Museum. It is probably most famous for the tapestry/embroidery, but also has a ceramics/painting/lace museum and beautiful cathedral.

HONFLEUR is a picturesque fishing port with tall houses alongside the harbour, attracting lots of artists.

ROUEN is a medieval town, on the River Seine, with timbered houses, a fishing port and Gothic church. Place du Vieux Marche is where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake.
GIVERNEY Home of Claude Monet, an impressionist artist particularly famous for his water-lily paintings. Roam the lovely gardens or view the reproductions of his paintings on display.

Calvados regions Lisieux, Cambremert, Pont l'Eveque, Livarot are on the 'calvados (apple brandy), cider and cheese route'.

Driving In France

Lake Guerledan in Central Brittany, France

Lac de Guerledan is situated in the Cotes d'Armor region (22) of France, near the small town of Mur de Bretagne and the Nantes-Brest canal. It's one of Brittany's largest artificial lakes with two small beaches. Local activities include water-sports (boat hire, water-skiing, etc), fishing, cycling (bike hire available), horse-riding, rambling and birdwatching. The disused railway track (from St Meen to Carhaix) and the canal towpaths are ideal for cyclists and ramblers. There is a Fete du Lac (including a firework display) each year on the 15th August.

Abbaye de Bon Repos : this Cistercian abbey is nearby at St Gelven, beside the Nantes-Brest canal. There is an annual 'Son et Lumiere, Le Pays de Conomor' (Sound and Light Show) using the abbey as its backdrop. Evening performances 29th July, 31st July, 1st August, 5th August, 7th August, 8th August 2015. One suggestion - wear something warm!
