D-Day Landings - Normandy - France

6th June 1944. The allied invasion (American, British and Canadian) of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Landing beaches are Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah and there are many museums and cemeteries. The artificial Mulberry Harbours were created at Arromanches. The battery at Longues-sur-Mer is one of the German gun emplacements along the Atlantic wall. Pegasus Bridge and the large Memorial Museum are in Caen.

It is now an island with a connecting bridge from the mainland and is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. La Mere Poulard is a famous 3* hotel / restaurant renowned for its cuisine including omelettes and a local speciality is pre-salted lamb (agneau pre-sale) as the sheep have grazed on the salt marsh meadows.
The bay is tidal and the region is very picturesque.
