Chambre d'hôte - Bed & Breakfast

La chambre d'hôte is Bed and Breakfast in french.
There is a large selection of quality accommodation on the choices4all.com website with a mix of English and French owners, all offering a warm and friendly welcome. Whether looking for a castle (château), manor (manoir), hotel (hôtel), country inn (auberge), youth hostel (auberge de jeunesse), guest house (pension) or a private home, the choice is yours with many offering half board (en demi-pension) or full board (en pension complète).
A typical french breakfast (le petit déjeuner) usually consists of coffee, bread, croissants and jam, some establishments will offer a more complete breakfast on request.
Sometimes the room (la chambre) and the breakfast (le petit déjeuner) are charged separately.

Here are a few phrases/words you may find helpful when visiting France:
je voudrais une chambre pour un personne - I would like a room for one person
nous voudrions une chambre pour deux personnes - we would like a room for two persons
une chambre tranquille - a quiet room
avec douche - with shower
avec salle de bains - with bathroom
des toilettes privées - private toilet
avec un grand lit - with large bed
avec des lits jumeaux - with twin beds
non-fumeur - non-smoking
le chauffage - heating
la climatisation - air conditioning
quel est le prix par nuit / par semaine ? - what is the cost per night / per week ?
l'office de tourisme / le syndicat initiative - tourist office (symbol i )
un plan de ville - street map
où sont les toilettes ? - where are the toilets ?
un café noir - a black coffee
un café decafeiné - caffeine-free coffee
un café au lait - a coffe with milk
un grand crème - large milky coffee
du thé au lait - tea with milk
du thé au citron - lemon tea
un chocolat chaud - hot chocolate
un jus de fruit - fruit juice
une bouteille d'eau - bottle of water

Our tip: a pocket-sized phrase book is a very handy accessory when travelling in France. Many residents speak a little English but by no means all, especially in some of the more quiet and remote villages. Think of it as a mark of respect to at least try and converse in their language, we find this helps 'break the ice' and the locals will definitely appreciate your efforts!

Travel to France

There are many options to choose from when travelling to France: via the ferries, airlines or Eurostar and then maybe with the need of car hire, train/coach connections or insurance. For example speedferries offer very reasonable crossings from Dover to Boulogne. This gives you the chance to incorporate an overnight stay in french Bed & Breakfast accommodation on route to your favoured destination and to save money, when compared with fares on other ferry crossings.
