The 106th Tour de France cycle race starts in Bruxelles in Belgum before arriving at Epernay in North-Eastern France, one of the principle production centres of champagne Grand-Est (formerly Lorraine / Alsace) . Continuing to the Vosges mountains  Grand Est (formerly Champagne - Ardennes), then heading south-east through Franche-Comte, Burgundy / Bourgogne, Loire and Cantal Auvergne / Rhone-AlpesOccitanie (formerly Midi- Pyrenees and Languedoc-Roussillon),   Provence, Alpes and Cote d'Azur, Savoie Auvergne / Rhone Alpes before finishing the final day from Rambouillet, Yvelines to Paris in Ile de France.

There are 7 flat stages, 5 hilly stages, 7 mountain ranges and 5 mountain-top finishes - the Vosgesthe Pyrennees, the Massif Central, the Alps , covering a distance of approximately 3460kms.

There are 6 classification awards:
Yellow Jersey -- leader of general classification
Polka Dot Jersey -- leader of best climbers classification
Green Jersey -- leader of points classification
White Jersey -- best young rider age 25 years or under
Team Classification-- (teams 3 best riders' totals added together) - wear yellow helmets and race numbers in next stage
Most Aggressive rider --  Distinction awarded at end of each stage - winner wears red numbers in next stage
